Whether you’re in GP specialty training (GPST) or thinking about pursuing a GP career in the future, this article will provide you with useful information to understand how GP salaries are calculated across the UK.

How much is a GP Salary?

Average GP salary in the UK

The average GP salary in the UK is £87,884, which is £7,323 monthly. There is no set pay scale for GPs in the UK, your salary reflects your years of experience, level of responsibility, qualifications, and the UK nation where you are working. The Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration (DDRB) advises the government on rates for doctors and dentists. Each year they publish a review which outlines the minimum and maximum Salaried General Medical Practitioner range.

Every individual or partnership of GPs in the UK will hold an NHS GP contract to run an NHS-commissioned service. All types of contracts are managed by the NHS commissioner (either NHS England or integrated care systems). The service is responsible for paying its workforce directly and not by the NHS.
